CONTEMPORARY VILLA INTERIOR DESIGN IN BENAHAVÍS
This 681 m² contemporary villa in Benahavís comprises six bedrooms and was conceived as a refined, comfortable home with a deliberately understated character. Tania Tsygel’s Interior Design studio developed the complete interior scheme, shaping the relationship between architecture, furniture, bespoke elements and decorative lighting.
The generous scale of the property presented a particular design challenge in the main living room: the space needed to accommodate two distinct living areas without losing its sense of openness or architectural proportion. Rather than introducing a conventional partition, we approached the division through a sculptural architectural element that became an integral part of the interior composition.
The project demonstrates how spatial planning, bespoke design and architectural lighting can give a large contemporary interior structure and character without relying on excessive decoration.
UNDERSTATED CONTEMPORARY DESIGN
The interior was intentionally kept restrained, allowing the architecture and carefully composed volumes to provide the visual character. Rather than relying on strong colours or an abundance of decoration, we worked with proportion, texture and subtle contrasts to create a sophisticated and comfortable atmosphere.
The neutral palette provides continuity across the large living space, while bespoke furniture, specialist joinery and sculptural lighting introduce individuality at a more architectural level. This approach allows the interior to remain visually calm while still offering a sense of depth and detail.
For a villa of this scale, restraint was an important part of the design: the objective was not to fill the space, but to give its generous proportions a clear and considered structure.
DIVIDING A LARGE LIVING SPACE WITHOUT LOSING ITS SCALE
One of the central design challenges was the scale of the main living room. Its generous proportions called for two distinct living areas, yet dividing the space with a conventional wall or partition would have compromised the openness that made the room distinctive.
We therefore used the fireplace as a spatial device rather than treating it simply as a functional feature. Positioned between the two areas, it establishes a subtle architectural boundary while allowing the room to remain visually connected.
This approach created definition without fragmentation: each living zone has its own function and sense of intimacy, while the full volume of the room remains perceptible. The result is a more structured interior in which spatial zoning becomes part of the architecture itself.
A SCULPTURAL FIREPLACE BETWEEN TWO LIVING ZONES
The fireplace was conceived as the defining architectural element between the two living areas. Instead of stopping at conventional wall height, its composition rises towards the ceiling, creating a strong vertical presence within the generous volume of the room.
The design is formed by two distinct volumes: a substantial lower section and an upper element that appears to float above it. This deliberate separation gives the fireplace a sense of lightness despite its scale, while the gap between the two parts reinforces the visual connection across the room.
More than a functional feature, the fireplace acts as an architectural intervention that organises the living space. It establishes a clear relationship between the two zones while preserving the openness and visual continuity of the original room.
LIGHTING AS ARCHITECTURE
Lighting was conceived as part of the architecture rather than added as a separate decorative layer. Integrated into the walls, the illumination follows a carefully developed pattern that interacts with changes in surface, depth and volume.
The lighting becomes particularly expressive after dark, when the illuminated sections emphasise the relief of the walls and create an additional layer of architectural depth. Instead of simply lighting the room, it helps define its geometry and reinforce the relationship between the surrounding surfaces and the central fireplace.
This approach allowed the lighting scheme to become an integral part of the interior design — simultaneously functional, decorative and architectural.
BESPOKE DETAILS WITHIN A RESTRAINED PALETTE
The understated character of the interior is supported by a carefully coordinated combination of bespoke furnishings, specialist joinery and refined wall finishes. Rather than introducing decorative elements independently, we designed them to work together with the architecture and the proportions of the living space.
Furniture was selected and composed to provide comfort while maintaining visual clarity within the generous room. Custom elements add a more personal dimension to the scheme, allowing functional requirements to become part of the overall design language.
The result is an interior where individuality comes through in the details and proportions rather than through excessive decoration — a contemporary villa defined by precision, balance and a quiet sense of sophistication.
