MEDITERRANEAN PENTHOUSE INTERIOR DESIGN IN MARBELLA
This 294 m² penthouse in Marbella comprises three bedrooms and was conceived as a contemporary Mediterranean home centred around its exceptional coastal setting. The brief was to create a calm, sophisticated interior that would feel connected to the landscape while providing a comfortable and highly considered environment for everyday living.
The project was developed as a complete interior design scheme, encompassing the layout, furniture, materials, lighting and decorative finishes. A restrained natural palette, tactile surfaces and bespoke elements were introduced to soften the contemporary architecture and establish a warmer, more personal character throughout the residence.
The panoramic sea views became an important part of the design thinking, particularly in the open-plan living area and rooftop terrace, where the interior and exterior were composed to preserve the visual connection with the Mediterranean landscape.
MEDITERRANEAN ELEGANCE — A SENSORY APPROACH
The concept was built around the idea of relaxed Mediterranean luxury rather than formal minimalism. We wanted the interior to feel naturally connected to its coastal setting, using light, texture and organic materials to create an atmosphere that is sophisticated without becoming austere.
Warm travertine, light woods, natural stone and refined marble form the foundation of the palette, while handcrafted decorative plaster gives the walls a softer, more tactile quality. The restrained colours allow the changing Mediterranean light and the panoramic views to remain an essential part of the visual experience.
Furniture and decorative elements were selected for their sculptural qualities as well as their comfort, introducing organic shapes and subtle contrasts against the clean architectural background. The overall composition was deliberately kept calm and uncluttered, allowing a small number of distinctive elements to carry greater visual weight.
TURNING STRUCTURAL CONSTRAINTS INTO DESIGN FEATURES
One of the key challenges was the presence of immovable load-bearing columns within the main living area and the master bedroom. Rather than concealing them or allowing them to compromise the composition of the rooms, interior designer Tania Tsygel treated these structural elements as opportunities to introduce distinctive architectural features.
In the living room, the central column became the starting point for a floating travertine fireplace. A custom steel structure supports the fireplace, while floor-to-ceiling mirror panels visually dissolve the original column and create the impression that the travertine volume is suspended within the space.
In the master bedroom, the second column was integrated into bespoke joinery, transforming an unavoidable structural element into part of the room’s architecture and functionality.
These interventions allowed the interior design studio to preserve the proportions and openness of the penthouse while turning two potentially disruptive elements into defining features of the interior.
OPEN-PLAN LIVING & DINING — FRAMING THE MEDITERRANEAN VIEW
The main living area was conceived around the relationship between the interior and the panoramic Mediterranean outlook. The open-plan arrangement brings the living, dining and kitchen areas together while keeping the sea views visually uninterrupted from the principal seating areas.
Rather than filling the generous room with furniture, we used carefully scaled pieces to define the different functions while preserving a sense of openness. The seating composition is oriented towards the view, with softer organic forms providing a counterpoint to the clean architectural lines.
Natural materials and tactile finishes reinforce the relaxed character of the scheme, while carefully positioned decorative elements add depth without competing with the landscape beyond. The result is a living environment in which the architecture, furnishings and Mediterranean setting are experienced as one continuous composition.
THE FLOATING TRAVERTINE FIREPLACE
One of the defining features of the living area is the sculptural travertine fireplace created around the existing structural column. Rather than allowing the column to remain a visual obstruction, Tania Tsygel Interior Design transformed it into a central architectural element.
A custom steel structure supports the travertine volume, while floor-to-ceiling mirror strips on either side reflect the surrounding space and visually dissolve the original structural core. This creates the impression of a solid stone fireplace floating within the open-plan interior.
The intervention combines structural problem-solving with a strong decorative statement, giving the living room a distinctive focal point while preserving the openness and uninterrupted views that shaped the overall design.
MASTER BEDROOM
The master bedroom continues the Mediterranean character of the penthouse through a more intimate and restrained composition. The design combines warm natural materials, soft textures and carefully controlled decorative elements to create a calm private retreat.
One of the existing structural columns was concealed within a bespoke furniture composition conceived by Tania Tsygel. The design integrates the column with a floating desk and drawer unit, turning an unavoidable structural element into part of a functional and visually lightweight piece of furniture. Custom cabinetry provides both practical storage and a seamless visual connection between the structural element and the rest of the interior.
Behind the bed, an accent wall introduces a contrasting decorative treatment. Asymmetrically positioned wallpaper with a plaster-effect finish creates a tactile backdrop to the headboard, adding depth and an element of visual irregularity to the otherwise calm composition.
A muted palette of natural wood, stone and textured finishes keeps the atmosphere sophisticated yet relaxed, while the carefully positioned lighting creates a softer ambience in the evening. The result is a bedroom designed not simply as a sleeping area, but as an integral part of the penthouse’s overall Mediterranean experience.
GUEST BEDROOMS
The two guest bedrooms were designed as distinct spaces within the same Mediterranean scheme, with individual compositions rather than a repeated furniture arrangement. Each room combines a restrained palette with tactile materials and carefully selected furnishings to create a comfortable and visually balanced atmosphere.
We used differences in textures, decorative details and furniture to give each bedroom its own character while maintaining a coherent relationship with the rest of the penthouse. Soft upholstery, natural finishes and considered lighting bring warmth to the rooms without competing with the architecture or the views.
The result is a pair of guest suites that feel connected to the overall design yet retain their own identity and sense of privacy.
ROOFTOP TERRACE
The rooftop terrace was conceived as a natural extension of the interior, making full use of the penthouse’s panoramic Mediterranean views. With direct lift access, the space was organised into distinct areas for outdoor dining, lounging and relaxation.
The main dining area was designed around a fully equipped outdoor kitchen, creating a practical setting for entertaining and enjoying meals outdoors. Comfortable lounge seating and sun loungers complete the composition, with each zone positioned to take advantage of the views while maintaining a clear and balanced layout.
Our approach was to treat the terrace as an integral part of the interior design rather than as an additional outdoor space. The carefully selected furniture, materials and layout create a seamless transition between the refined Mediterranean interiors and the open coastal setting.
MATERIALS & DECORATIVE FINISHES
The material palette was developed to reinforce the relaxed sophistication of the Mediterranean concept. Light woods, raw travertine, refined marble and other natural finishes create a warm foundation, while textured surfaces add depth and tactile interest.
Decorative plaster plays an important role throughout the penthouse, softening the architecture and helping to diffuse the strong Mediterranean light. Rather than relying on excessive decoration, we used variations in texture, tone and finish to create visual richness within a restrained palette.
Each material was selected as part of the overall composition, ensuring that the architecture, bespoke elements and furnishings work together as a coherent interior rather than as a collection of individual finishes.
LIGHTING & ATMOSPHERE
Lighting was treated as an integral part of the interior composition, helping to define different areas and emphasise the textures of the natural materials. A combination of architectural, decorative and ambient lighting creates different layers of illumination throughout the penthouse.
Warm, carefully positioned light enhances the travertine, wood and plaster finishes while creating a softer atmosphere in the evening. Decorative fixtures were selected not only for their function but also for their sculptural quality, adding character without competing with the Mediterranean views.
The lighting scheme allows the character of the interior to evolve throughout the day, from a bright, open environment filled with natural Spanish light to a more intimate and atmospheric setting after sunset.
RESULT — A DISTINCTIVE MEDITERRANEAN PENTHOUSE
The completed interior brings together Mediterranean warmth, refined materials and carefully resolved architectural details, creating a home that feels both sophisticated and relaxed. The original structural constraints became defining elements of the design, while bespoke joinery, furniture and decorative finishes give the penthouse a strong individual character.
For Tania Tsygel Interior Design, the project was about creating a complete environment in which architecture, interiors and the surrounding Mediterranean landscape are closely connected. From the floating travertine fireplace to the rooftop dining area and outdoor kitchen, every element was considered as part of one coherent composition.
The result is a distinctive three-bedroom penthouse in Marbella where materiality, functionality and the exceptional coastal setting work together to create a timeless contemporary Mediterranean interior.
