MODERN VILLA INTERIOR DESIGN IN MARBELLA
This 584 m² new-build villa in Marbella was purchased as a high-quality architectural shell with five bedrooms, but its newly completed interior lacked the individual character and sense of identity expected of a private luxury home. Our task was to transform the neutral new-build environment into a distinctive interior tailored to the owners and the way they wanted to live.
We developed the project as a complete interior design scheme, from spatial planning and the selection of furniture, materials and lighting to the decorative details that give the rooms their character. The approach was to work with the villa’s contemporary architecture rather than compete with it, introducing warmth, texture, individuality and carefully considered focal points throughout the home.
DESIGN APPROACH — BALANCE, CONTRAST & COMPOSITION
The interior was conceived around a balance between the villa’s clean architectural lines and a richer, more tactile residential atmosphere. Instead of introducing visual complexity, we used a restrained palette and carefully selected contrasts to create depth while preserving the clarity of the architecture.
Scale and proportion became particularly important across the generous interiors. Large furniture pieces were balanced with lighter elements, sculptural forms were introduced against quieter backgrounds, and carefully positioned accents were used to establish focal points without overwhelming the rooms.
This considered approach allowed the architecture to remain present while giving the interior a more layered and expressive quality — sophisticated enough for the scale of the property, yet comfortable and personal in everyday use.
LIVING AREA — A BALANCE OF COMFORT AND FORM
The living room was designed as the principal gathering space of the house, with an emphasis on comfort, generous proportions and visual calm. The furniture arrangement was carefully composed around the fireplace, allowing the seating to feel substantial enough for the scale of the room while keeping clear sightlines across the open interior.
Custom-made sofas and armchairs in warm neutral tones establish the main seating composition, while a sculptural marble-and-metal coffee table introduces a contrasting centrepiece. The fireplace provides a natural focal point, while an exclusive handmade by the designer specifically for this villa chandelier becomes the defining element above the seating area.
Composed of multiple pendant lights in different shapes and suspended at varying heights, the chandelier creates a dynamic three-dimensional installation that adds volume and a strong architectural presence to the room. Its sculptural arrangement was designed to work in dialogue with the bespoke furnishings, becoming an integral part of the overall composition rather than simply a source of illumination.
Additional recessed lighting provides a softer layer of illumination, allowing the atmosphere to shift throughout the day while keeping the focus on the architectural and decorative elements of the room. Soft fabrics, layered textures and restrained metallic accents complete the setting without competing with its principal features.
KITCHEN & DINING — FUNCTIONAL ELEGANCE
The kitchen was approached as an integral part of the main living environment, so its functional requirements could be combined with the visual character of the surrounding spaces. Clean lines and generous surfaces maintain the architectural simplicity, while carefully chosen finishes introduce warmth and distinction.
High-end custom cabinetry was selected for its sleek appearance and practical storage capacity, with integrated appliances maintaining a continuous, uncluttered composition. The central island, finished with a marble countertop, provides both a practical working surface and an informal place for breakfast and conversation.
The adjacent dining area was given a stronger decorative presence through the combination of a substantial dining table, upholstered chairs and a statement chandelier. This creates a visual transition from the more functional kitchen while keeping both areas connected as part of one coherent living environment.
MASTER BEDROOM — A CALM, PRIVATE RETREAT
The master bedroom was conceived as a serene and highly tactile retreat, using subtle colour, handcrafted details and layered surfaces to create a sense of depth and individuality. The walls were finished in a delicate pale mint tone — a soft “Pale Mint Mist” — which gives the room a fresh, tranquil quality while providing a gentle contrast to the warmer furnishings and natural materials.
The centrepiece of the room is the king-size bed, framed by a hand-crafted plaster bas-relief created specifically for the interior. Rather than using artwork as an addition to the finished room, we incorporated this sculptural element directly into the composition of the headboard wall, turning the surface itself into a work of art.
Different types of decorative plaster were used throughout the suite to introduce subtle variations in texture and light. These handcrafted finishes add depth to the restrained colour palette and create a richer visual experience as natural and artificial light moves across the surfaces.
Bespoke cabinetry continues into the walk-in dressing room, where storage was integrated into the architecture to maintain a clean and composed appearance. The en-suite bathroom extends the atmosphere through a restrained material palette, freestanding bathtub and rain shower, creating a private space centred around comfort and relaxation.
The result is a bedroom that combines contemporary refinement with craftsmanship and tactile detail, where the walls, lighting, furniture and architectural elements work together as one carefully composed interior.
BESPOKE CRAFTSMANSHIP & MATERIALS
Material selection was central to giving the new-build architecture a more distinctive and tactile character. Rather than relying on a large number of decorative finishes, we focused on a considered combination of natural stone, marble, wood and richly textured textiles, allowing differences in surface, grain and reflectivity to add depth to the interiors.
Bespoke cabinetry and furniture were developed alongside the architectural finishes, ensuring that individual elements were proportioned specifically for their surroundings. Natural woods bring warmth to the cleaner architectural lines, while marble introduces a sense of solidity and refinement. Velvet, silk and linen add softer layers and make the larger spaces feel more residential and comfortable.
Metallic details in brushed gold and matte black were introduced selectively to sharpen the composition and create subtle contrasts. Across the villa, these materials were combined with different decorative plaster finishes and handcrafted elements to create a richer, more layered environment without losing the clarity of the contemporary architecture.
The result is a material palette that feels cohesive without being repetitive, with each finish contributing to the atmosphere, proportions and character of the individual spaces.
LIGHTING AS PART OF THE ARCHITECTURE
Lighting was planned as an integral part of the interior architecture, with different layers used to shape the atmosphere and emphasise key elements throughout the villa. Rather than relying on uniform illumination, the scheme combines ambient, task and accent lighting to give each area its own visual rhythm.
Recessed ceiling lights provide a discreet foundation of soft, even illumination, while chandeliers and pendant lights introduce sculptural focal points in the living and dining areas. LED strips were integrated into architectural details and bespoke elements, adding depth and highlighting selected surfaces without becoming visually dominant.
Smart lighting controls allow the intensity and mood to be adjusted according to the time of day and use of each space. This flexibility was particularly important in a large open-plan home, where lighting helps transform the atmosphere from bright and energetic during the day to warmer and more intimate in the evening.
The lighting scheme therefore works alongside the furniture, materials and architectural features rather than sitting separately from them — enhancing proportions, textures and focal points while remaining understated when it needs to be.
INDOOR–OUTDOOR LIVING
The outdoor areas were treated as an extension of the interior, with the same attention given to proportion, comfort and visual continuity. The aim was to create a series of settings that would make full use of Marbella’s climate and the villa’s panoramic outlook rather than treating the exterior as a secondary space.
Around the infinity pool, we arranged a relaxed lounge area with comfortable seating and shaded pergolas, creating a natural place for conversation and relaxation. An outdoor dining area was positioned to support al fresco meals while maintaining the connection with the surrounding landscape.
The landscaping was kept deliberately Mediterranean, with carefully selected planting reinforcing the natural character of the setting. Furniture, shade structures and planting were coordinated with the interior palette so that the transition from inside to outside feels seamless.
The result is an outdoor environment that functions as an integral part of the home — equally suited to quiet moments, entertaining and enjoying the views.
A DISTINCTIVE INTERIOR FOR A CONTEMPORARY MARBELLA VILLA
The transformation of this new-build property was achieved not through a single defining gesture, but through the considered coordination of architecture, furniture, materials, lighting and handcrafted details. Each intervention was chosen to add depth and character while preserving the clean lines and generous proportions of the original villa.
From the sculptural living room chandelier and bespoke furnishings to the handcrafted plasterwork of the master bedroom and the carefully layered outdoor spaces, the interior was developed as a complete and cohesive composition. The result is a home that feels individual, refined and deeply connected to its Mediterranean setting — while retaining the clarity and sophistication of its contemporary architecture.
